British Antarctic Survey (BAS) are looking for an exceptional Marine Biologist to join our hard-working team at King Edward Point. BAS delivers and enables world-leading interdisciplinary research in the Polar Regions. What we offer:

In addition, you will be provided with pre-deployment training and accommodation costs. All food, accommodation and polar clothing during Antarctic deployment will also be provided.

You'll be joining our King Edward Point Science team, which sits within the Ecosystems Team at BAS. The focus of the team is the Southern Ocean ecosystem and providing science to underpin the UK contribution to the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Living Resources (CCAMLR).

You'll help us to deliver all aspects of the laboratory, field and ship-based research programme undertaken by BAS on behalf of the Government of South Georgia & the South Sandwich Islands (GSGSSI) and the FCDO (Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office).

Training will be provided for various aspects of the role including; piloting small drones, otolith setting and preparation, boat driving and advanced First Aid training.

Current projects the team are working on include; the long term monitoring of Antarctic fur seals and gentoo penguins, at sea surveying of krill and krill predators and the setting and ageing of Patagonian toothfish otoliths for the South Georgia stock assessment.

Your main responsibilities will include:

  • To assist with all aspects of the research programme, lab and field based, at King Edward Point, South Georgia.
  • To undertake monitoring of key populations of marine predators (Antarctic fur seals, gentoo penguins, Southern elephant seals) as part of established long term monitoring efforts.
  • Participate in ship-based scientific surveys, recording acoustic data, deploying small plankton nets and scientific equipment and undertaking predator (whale and mammal) observations.
  • Participate in the Biennial Groundfish survey around South Georgia and Shag Rocks.
  • Record and handle data to a high standard.
  • Produce scientific reports, with the opportunity to contribute to scientific papers where appropriate.


For the role of Marine Biologist, we are looking for somebody who has:

  • Been awarded an honours degree in marine biology (or similar) by the interview date
  • Has at-sea fieldwork experience
  • Has strong report writing and data-handling skills
