Job Description

This is an opportunity to establish yourself as a Maritime Systems Engineer and Project Engineering Lead (PEL). A long-term key role within the UM UK Sonar Business. We are a supplier to the Royal Navy and global allies with a reputation for agility. This role reports into the Project Manager (and functional Line Manager) and will work closely with the Systems Design Authority and Engineering Manager.

As the PEL, you will be overseeing the engineering throughout product development across Technology Levels, building upon existing products. You will be responsible for providing engineering leadership, supporting customer meetings, and involved in hands-on engineering. This is a Principal Systems Engineer level position suitable for an experienced engineering leader with demonstrable success in engineering management and team leadership, with an appreciation of mature complex engineering and experience of leading development across the product development lifecycle, ideally in Maritime with:

  • Expertise in Systems Engineering with an understanding of Software, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering
  • An appreciation of designing complex products
  • Systems design experience
  • Experience of working throughout the development lifecycle (design through to integration, verification, validation, and qualification)
  • Expertise in trade-off analysis
  • Technology insertion (e.g. Urgent Capability Requirements)
  • Supporting in-service products/systems and quality/issue resolution (e.g. experience of structured problem solving)
  • Experience of creating engineering schedules with dependencies
  • Experience of engineering estimation, with an ability to review, challenge and justify estimates
  • Experience of management of risks, assumptions, issues, decisions, and opportunities
  • Expertise in managing a multidisciplinary team to deliver the scope of Work Packages to time and cost
  • Mature Engineering in accordance with a Business Management System
  • Awareness of security, export control, and health safety
  • Sonar awareness would be useful but is not essential
  • This role requires eligibility for Security Check (SC) UK EYES only with no caveats

This is a hybrid role giving you the flexibility to balance working from home and regularly on-site at Greenford three days per week, with occasional UK & International travel. There will be a two-stage interview process. The first will be a video call with the Head of Systems Engineering, and the second will be an on-site interview with the Project Manager and Engineering Manager. The first will explore functional suitability and cover business/strategic fit, and the second will focus more on suitability for this project vacancy and project team fit.
