Job Description

Overview:

We are seeking a Field Engineer (Mechanical) to join our multidisciplinary surveillance team on a major infrastructure project. This role is focused on observing, capturing, and reporting mechanical installation works in the field. The successful candidate will ensure compliance with specifications and approved processes.
This role is based at the Bridgwater site 5 days a week, and would be ideal for candidates with solid mechanical experience looking to build long-term expertise within the NNB environment in a quality and compliance-focused capacity.

The Field Engineer is responsible for monitoring the construction, installation, and assembly of mechanical equipment - including static and rotating machinery, piping, supports, and welding—on a Nuclear Power Plant construction site. The role ensures all activities are carried out in accordance with the Contractor’s Work Information, providing confidence in quality and compliance. As part of the wider project team, the engineer supports the delivery of team objectives and quality targets.

📋 Principal Accountabilities

Monitor construction works to verify compliance with quality standards and surveillance strategy.
Report to the Construction Superintendent for day-to-day oversight.
Input into site-wide coordination and collaborate with other operational teams
Support and suggest improvements to construction, HSE, and quality protocols.
Check works meet the Contractor’s Work Information and flag any deviations or non-conformances
Record and report findings to both Construction and Quality teams.
Assist in identifying and raising Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs) when needed.
Maintain proactive communication with all stakeholders to ensure timely and accurate surveillance updates
Provide input for KPI tracking and performance indicators.
Identify and flag potential quality risks early to support mitigation actions
Help implement temporary quality safeguards while ensuring safe continuation of works.
Ensure all design decisions go through formal quality channels — no ad-hoc field changes
Maintain awareness of current and upcoming site activities for better anticipation and planning.
Ensure tasks align with company health, safety, and environmental requirements
Understand contractual and technical requirements, including drawings, QCPs, and inspection records.
Confirm all Quality Inspection Records are completed and accepted before works are concealed.
Review and assess Contractor performance against their authorised Quality Control Plans.

Qualifications

🌟 Key Responsibilities:

Observe mechanical installation and erection works across various scopes and confirm compliance to specifications.
Capture and record findings accurately, maintaining clear and traceable records.
Distribute relevant information to Construction and Quality teams as required.
Attend progress and surveillance meetings; manage outcomes of observations with stakeholders.
Conduct documentation reviews and checks, ensuring alignment with BTS, BST, ISO9001, GQAS, and other quality requirements.
Write clear, concise, and contractually relevant diary entries and reports.
Perform punchlist checks and support close-out processes.
Operate as a key member of a transverse project team including quality, construction, and surveillance disciplines.
Maintain independence while being persuasive and diplomatic in interactions with contractors.⚡️ Essential Skills & Experience:

Mechanical Engineering qualification or welding vocational training with significant relevant experience.
Proven experience in installation/erection of:
Pipework
Tanks/Vessels
Steelwork
HVAC systems
Turbines/Generators
Pumps, Valves, and Heat Exchangers
Strong knowledge of:
Alignment checks
Torque control and joint integrity
FME/back-out checks
QA/QC processes and punchlists
NCRs (Non-Conformance Reports) and ITPs (Inspection & Test Plans)
Excellent attention to detail in checking materials, equipment, and completed works.
Broad understanding of materials, trades, construction methods, and legal/compliance obligations.
Competent user of Microsoft Outlook, Excel, SharePoint, Teams, PowerPoint, and electronic field data capture tools.
Strong written and verbal communication skills in English (French is an advantage).
Ability to work collaboratively within a high-performing and cross-functional team.
Organised, proactive, and capable of operating independently in a challenging environment.❤️ Desirable:

Experience working on large-scale mechanical equipment installations.
Background in large, multidisciplinary construction teams.
Familiarity with CDM Regulations and document/drawing approval processes.
Interest in developing within a nuclear new build environment over a 2–3 year period.
