Job Description

Ultra Precision Control Systems (PCS) are looking for a Lead Test Design Engineer to join the Engineering Function. Reporting directly to the Senior Engineering Manager for Test Equipment (TE) Design, the TE Design Lead Engineer shall contribute to the overall TE Design strategy for new product design and the maintenance and improvement of existing TE Designs.

In this role you shall monitor TE Design tasks, giving team members guidance on priorities, arranging collaboration where appropriate and ensuring methods used follow the agreed strategy for TE design and deliver safe, reliable TE which complies to the TE requirements and can be used, maintained and calibrated.

This role shall also collaborate as required with Product Design project teams, the TE Sustainment team, the calibration team, manufacturing engineering and other areas of the business which contribute to or are stakeholders for TE Design.

Lead Engineer for the Test Equipment Design team. You will work with the team to co-ordinate their efforts ensuring consistency and best practice is applied at all times. Responsible for the line management of a small team (around 5 staff members) you will also engage in TE design for new product (both design verification TE and Production ATE) and design upgrades and improvements to existing TE.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the TE team (which is located on multiple sites).
  • Work with the Senior Engineering Manager to create and deploy a TE Design strategy, responding to the needs of the business.
  • Oversee the TE design and upgrade work to ensure co-ordination and optimization of task execution.
  • Conceive, cost and generate new TE designs.
  • Fault find existing TE Designs.
  • Analyse Test Data to characterize specific faults.
  • Co-ordinate with other departments to ensure TE design meets all relevant requirements including design for use in operations, design for calibration, design for maintenance, design for transport etc.
  • Validate the design against all requirements, documenting the validation process using standard templates and methods.
  • Build and test TE, interfacing harnesses and any associated peripheral equipment.
  • Provide engineering expertise at development/design review meetings, reducing technical risks and ensuring the overarching TE Design principles are upheld.
  • Remain aware of trends and emerging technology and tools within own discipline and share ideas on how this can be leveraged.
  • Mentor and teach others to pass on skills and experience.
  • Possess a broad and comprehensive understanding of own area of expertise, playing a leading role in defining the standards and processes around which others will operate.
  • Write reports, present work undertaken and make recommendations to influence and persuade project stakeholders.
  • Occasionally carry out duties off-site as required.
  • Adhere to Ultra policies, procedures, and practices at all times.
  • Carry out any other duties as reasonably required by management.

Required Skills & Experience:

  • Relevant qualifications to an appropriate level, typically a Degree in Electronics Engineering or equivalent industry experience. Significant post-qualification experience in a range of roles within a relevant complex engineering environment.
  • Significant experience in the design, build and test of Test Equipment for design validation, product acceptance testing, testing at supplier and Special to Type Test Equipment at customer.
  • Experience of small team leadership.
  • Possess expert-level knowledge and understanding of engineering fundamentals, processes, standards, procedures, tools and systems to be applied in carrying out assigned engineering tasks.
  • Ensure system-level TE technical specifications (i.e. requirements, procurement, testing) are met or exceeded.
  • Robust knowledge of project and engineering lifecycles and comprehensive understanding of own discipline activities, and the activities of closely related disciplines, at each stage of the lifecycle.
  • Experience of reviewing reports and presenting work undertaken at executive and customer design reviews.
  • Drawing packages.
  • Labview or other similar software.
  • Assembly of large equipment.
  • Safe and competent assembly of electrical elements into a large assembly.
  • Maintenance and fault finding in complex TE assemblies.
