Electronics CAD Technician

Windracers develops and operates large autonomous fixed-wing UAVs designed for logistics, humanitarian, and defence applications. Our aircraft combine long-range capability with advanced autonomy to operate efficiently, reliably, and safely. As we expand our programmes and develop next-generation platforms, we are seeking an Electronics CAD Technician / Cable Assembly Draftsman to produce and maintain the electrical, wiring, and cable harness documentation that supports reliable, repeatable manufacture across our fleet.

Role Overview

• We are seeking an organised and detail-focused Electronics CAD Technician / Cable Assembly Draftsman to produce accurate electrical design and manufacturing documentation for electronic systems, wiring looms, and cable assemblies.
• Working closely with electrical, mechanical, and manufacturing engineers, you will use SolidWorks Electrical to create and maintain electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, cable and harness drawings, connector pinouts, bills of materials, and production drawing packs. Your work will provide the controlled documentation needed to build, inspect, test, and support reliable electrical assemblies.

Key Responsibilities

• Create and maintain electrical schematics, single-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, and interconnection drawings using SolidWorks Electrical.
• Produce detailed cable, wire-harness, and loom assembly drawings, including wire identification, lengths, routing, shielding, breakouts, connector details, and termination requirements.
• Generate and maintain connector pinout schedules, cable schedules, wire lists, from-to lists, and bills of materials.
• Prepare clear manufacturing documentation for cable assembly, inspection, test, and installation activities.
• Develop 2D drawings and support 3D routing or mechanical integration of harnesses where required.
• Select and document suitable wires, cables, connectors, backshells, heat shrink, sleeving, labels, protective coverings, and associated hardware under engineering direction.
• Ensure drawing packs identify applicable part numbers, revisions, materials, standards, tolerances, and assembly notes.
• Maintain accurate CAD libraries for electrical symbols, connectors, manufacturer parts, cable types, and standard components.
• Apply drawing standards, revision control, naming conventions, and document-release processes consistently.
• Review designs for completeness, manufacturability, clarity, and consistency before release.
• Work with production and cable-assembly technicians to resolve drawing queries and incorporate practical feedback into documentation.
• Support prototype builds, fault investigation, design updates, and engineering change requests.
• Liaise with electrical, mechanical, purchasing, quality, and manufacturing teams to ensure documentation supports the complete product lifecycle.
• Maintain configuration-controlled records in the company’s document-management and product-data management systems.

Essential Skills and Experience

• Proven experience producing electrical CAD drawings, wiring documentation, cable-harness drawings, or cable-assembly documentation.
• Competence with SolidWorks Electrical or comparable electrical CAD software.
• Strong understanding of electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, connector pinouts, cable schedules, and bill-of-material structures.
• Practical knowledge of cable and harness construction, including crimped contacts, connector systems, wire gauge, shielding, strain relief, sleeving, heat shrink, and labelling.
• Ability to interpret electrical, mechanical, and manufacturing requirements and convert them into accurate controlled drawings.
• High attention to detail, particularly in part numbers, pin numbering, wire identification, revisions, and cross-references.
• Familiarity with engineering drawing standards, document control, and revision-management processes.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with engineering and production teams.
• Proficient use of Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel for schedules and BOM management.

Desirable Skills and Experience

• Experience using SolidWorks 3D CAD and SolidWorks Electrical 3D for routed cable and harness design.
• Experience producing documentation for aerospace, defence, automotive, industrial, marine, robotics, medical, or other regulated products.
• Knowledge of IPC/WHMA-A-620, IPC-A-620, AS/EN 9100, ISO 9001, or equivalent wiring and quality standards.
• Experience with PLM, PDM, ERP, or controlled document-management systems.
• Familiarity with electrical test procedures, continuity testing, insulation resistance testing, and cable inspection requirements.
• Knowledge of EMC, grounding, bonding, shielding, and cable-segregation practices.
• Relevant qualification in electronics, electrical engineering, CAD, manufacturing engineering, or a related technical discipline.
